Kernel Event VQ_LOWDISK VQ_VERYLOWDISK on new iMac

Hi,

I purchased an iMac just two months ago and have been experiencing numerous problems with it. I have reinstalled the OS 4x times (erase & reinstall 2 of those times) and still am getting messages in the console VQ_LOWDISK and VQ_VERYLOWDISK and kernel: HFS: Very Low Disk: freeblks: 0, dangerlimit: 4 (although that number changes). The computer itself is slow to respond and sometimes doesn't respond at all.

After scouring Forums, I am thinking it is a RAM issue. However, I have ran the disk and hardware utilities with no obvious errors. Apple Customer Service has had me delete all non-Apple software to isolate the issue, but it has been a week since doing that and the issue still remains unsolved. Just today they had me reset the ACL password on my home directory, although I don't think that has anything to do with memory, but I don't know. I use this computer for work and this wait is negatively affecting my productivity. I really need an answer asap...

I have talked with the AppleCare people on at least 6 occasions over the last 5+ weeks and still have not resolved the above issue. I purchased an Apple because I wanted my computer to work...as of now, I am disappointed with its performance.

Thanks,

Sheila

Linc,

Thanks for your reply. The log below is dated Jan 14. I had just reinstalled LION for the last time a few days prior but hadn't used the computer much before the VQ_LOWDISK & VQ_VERYLOWDISK error occurred. I haven't added any extra software other than the OS and my printer up to this point.

Around the time that the error occurred, I had about 5-6 Safari windows/tabs open. I was switching from screen to screen between two windows (comparing two products) and then proceeded to download an ISO image that I was going to burn to a disk.

I have 4GB RAM (1.59GB still free as of today and no page outs or swap used since the reinstall) and 991.75GB free space on my HD.

These errors are intermittent. Also, Apple had me do something to release the NVRAM on the last reinstall. After the VQ_LOWDISK etc... showed up, I ran a Capture Data application.

**********************************END OF CONSOLE LOG****************************************

The "authentication" errors appear to be an UNRELATED issue, but I am not completely sure.

The console messages changes after every reinstall, however the VQ_LOWDISK and VQ_VERYLOWDISK messages have consistently shown on every one. I have gotten authentication errors on the others, just not the volume seen here.

Just in case, here is more info on the authentication errors.

The whole "unable to authenticate" and "failure to authenticate" is because somehow through the erase and reinstalls, my 1st user name (labeled CPM) remained. Apple doesn't believe me when I said I did an erase and reinstall (even though I did the last one with them), but I did...twice and yet somehow, this last time, my 1st username shows up (even though I used my first name this 4th time around). It didn't show up on the 3rd reinstall (however, my bookmarks bar did); only the 4th. I don't even know how that is possible... Logging into the App Store, perhaps because it was the same as my Apple Id name? Apple doesn't know how it happened but hopefully the password reset thing (sudo chmod -RN ~ and then resetpassword) Apple had me do will correct those error messages.)

Sincerely,

Sheila

Back up all data, if you haven't already done so. Then boot from your recovery partition (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, select the icon of the internal drive (not the icon of the volume below it) and run "Repair Disk" (not "Repair Permissions.") If any problems are found and successfully repaired, repeat. Then select the icon of the boot volume itself and do the same. Reboot as usual and test.

If you still have issues after that, I suggest you repartition the internal drive with the default options. This action will of course destroy all data on the drive, so you must have at least two independent, complete backups, both in known-good condition. One is not enough. After partitioning, recreate the boot volume and restore from one of the backups.

Linc,

I did a disk repair following the steps from your instructions, and there were no reported errors.

I was wondering if the diskmanagementd may have something to do with the Capture_Data program that I ran to capture what was going on in my machine. It runs with extension .dmg. I don't know for sure, just guessing...

Thanks,

Sheila

Hi Linc,

I jut wanted to update you on this issue I was having with my new iMac.

As I mentioned, I had been working with the Apple Care folks. The issue with my computer was once again escalated, so I was waiting to hear from their engineers/developers. Within 5 minutes of logging in last Wed, I was having problems with non-responsiveness, weird responsiveness (right clicked worked sometimes and sometimes not, Finder window sometimes worked and sometimes didn't, etc.) my computer was hopelessly problematic. I figured I was going to have to reinstall Lion OS (for the 5th time).

The original information from the developers was that my logs looked fine, however, as you can see from my screen shot, that really didn't correctly assess the actual state of my computer.

User uploaded file

I got to the point where images/icons were "freezing" on my screen and wouldn't go away until I rebooted. I was getting lots of random errors but, strangely no VQ_LOWDISK or VQ_VERYLOWDISK messages which was the original reason I initiated this thread.

Feeling on the verge of insanity, I packed up my 27" iMac and brought it in to the store. I showed them the screen shots and within 5 minutes, I was told I was getting a new computer and they would take my defective one. Immediately, the tech felt there was at least a graphics card issue, if not more going on. He also told me that a lot of times graphics card issues do not show up in the logs. Hmmm...

Although a bit cautiously, my faith in Apple is restored. I never expected a new computer, and that blew me away.

I just wanted to make sure and follow-up on this thread in case this helps someone else in their quest for answers.

Sincerely,

Sheila
