My hard drive is nearly full. I have no idea why. This user library says I'm using twice the size capacity of my original hard drive (250 GB). In "About this mac" my other files amount to 227 GB of "other files." I have no idea where these files are or how to get rid of them, but I would obviously like to solve this to improve my computers' performance.

What does it say in DISK UTILITY?
Down load OmniDiskSweeper from the Internet (free) and open it. This should give you a clue as to what files are on your HDD and their respective sizes. Note, The OmniDiskSweeper tends to give slightly smaller file size stats (7%) than the MBP.

Figured out it was FileVault being turned on and encrypting over itself A LOT. So, words to the wise, don't use FileVault unless you have a lot of extra room, work for the government, or just are seriously paranoid
