Q: iTunes 10 has trouble importing CDs

Ever since iTunes updated to 10.0, it seemingly imports from CDs only when it feels like it. CDs are recogonized in all drives (I have three), but it will only download the songs occasionaly. Diagnostics says that I have audio CD in the drive, but it just won't import. I have tried all of the solutions I could find on the Apple web sites, but no luck. Everytime Apple send an update I hope the problem will be fixed, but nothing. Anyone else having similar issues? Anyone have a fix?

I am able to "fool" iTunes by telling Windows to import the CD into iTunes by default, but I have to shut down iTunes after every CD.

I posted something similar earlier today. With iTunes closed, I load a CD, then start iTunes. When it opens it's aware of the CD and I can import it. To import a second CD, I have to shut down iTunes, switch CDs, re-open iTunes, and import. And so on. I, too, never had CD import dificulties before.

I have what sounds like the same problem.  I posted it over a month ago, but no suggestions.  As you describe, if a CD is in the drive when Itunes starts, it posts the drive in devices, obtains the track info from gracenotes, and will import the CD normally.  However, when I insert a new CD into the drive it does not seem to see the drive as it never appears in the device list nor does it read the tracks info or go to gracenote to obtain the track info.  I must exit Itunes and restart it.  When I exit and restart Itunes, the CD is read, gracenote consulted and importing is possible.

Any other application such as windows media player or the CD ripping software Exact Audio Copy work normally.

I have checked for updates to the CD/DVD drive and there are none.  I have performed the obligatory uninstall/reinstall of Itunes using the suggested uninstall procedure.

I believe I noticed the problem after installing Itunes 10.5.1.

This has become a real hassle as I use Itunes to organize my CD collection for use with my Ipod.

My iTunes ALWAYS see's the drive and it knows which one has a disk in it, I can eject the disk through iTunes, and it knows which drive to open. It just doesn't know what to do with it. The work around I posted above works, it's just a pain. I guess it's better than not being able to rip at all.

Well, I think we're increasingly safe in deciding that iTunes is the culprit, rather than anything regarding our machine configurations. The CD import used to work normally for all of us, then stopped working normally at the same time, and the same weird workaround being successful for all of us seems to reinforce this conclusion.

Now the question becomes, will Apple take notice or correct things?

    Have you tried this article:

Thanks wiclee, but none of these apply to my situation. iTunes and Windows have no problem recognizing the drives. iTunes is just being tempermental about ripping the music.

Hi all. I also have had this problem. I have talked to Apple suppor and a very nice lady talked me through a solution. Apparently the preferences files sometimes get corrupted so she talked me through deleting the following two directories:

    C:\users\your profile name\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes

    and

    C|\users\your profile name\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

I deleted those two and it works!

She also sent me a link to an article that explains....

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717?viewlocale=en_US

Hope it works for you guys.

One thing I forgot to mention above - after deleteing the two directories you need to reboot.
