Q: "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

I'm trying to update the OS on my iPod Touch.  It's model PC086LL, currently running iOS 4.0, and iTunes says 4.2 (or maybe 4.2.1) is available.  So I tell iTunes to update it, and I get the error message "This device isn't eligible for the requested build".  The "More information" button takes me to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275 , from which the obvious link seems to be to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694 , which lists that error message but has no suggestions other than "update to the latest version of iTunes," which I've already done.  (10.5.2, right?)

Any ideas?

This device is not eligible for the requested build: Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194." If you receive this alert, update to the latest version of iTunes. Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, follow Troubleshooting security software issues.

Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. First you must uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer, then edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from the hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect.  For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart. Also, using an older or modified .ipsw file can cause this issue. Try moving the current .ipsw file, or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

    Above is from:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694

and contains more that install latest iTunes.

Fair enough, that page does contain more suggestions than "install the latest iTunes".

I also went through the "Troubleshooting security software issues" and didn't find anything promising (my antivirals are up-to-date, I ran a virus scan, etc.).

There are no unauthorized modifications on this iPod; it's not jailbroken or anything like that.

I have no trouble connecting to the iTunes Store, so I don't think it's a hosts-file or firewall problem.

I tried deleting the .ipsw file and re-downloading through iTunes; same result as before.

I tried commenting out the gs.apple.com entry in /private/etc/hosts... hey! that works!  Thanks!

Hello! So i tried all of the options that Apple gave me, I've been trying to downgrade to iOS 9.0.1/9.0.2 (I have both) but i keep getting this error. I tried checking my hosts file but there wasn't any gs.apple.com, also, my iTunes has the last version and  i tried restarting my iPhone and MacBook Pro still doesn't work, my Firewall isn't active as well. The single options that remain is Restoring my MacBook Pro or try downgrading from another computer or windows.. Help?

    - using iPhone 5 (16 GB - CDMA)

    - using MacBook Pro (late 2013)

Apple does not support downgrading the IOS version. That is why y are getting the error. When you restore via iTunes, iTunes on the computer checks with Apple servers to see if you are using the latest iOS version. If not then y get the error.

How do you explain that other people were able to downgrade? They were just fine
