Mac input stereo or mono?

I have a mac mini when I put in stereo in on the mic input it only records one side. Am I using the wrong type of connector or is a limitation of the Mac Mini? When I send audio to that Mac Mini throigh the mic input it recored in mono. I have tried Garage band and Audacity and the results were the same. One side only gets recorded. Should I find a USB soultion to recored stereo and if so what suggestions can anyone make that will record stereo?

Both the Mac Mini's input and output jack ports are stereo.

Is the 3.5mm end that you have pluged into the Mac, segmented into three sections (right, left and common) for sterio?

If so, then check to see if it is fully seated into the Mac's Audio input jack?

If it only has two segments, then it is a mono plug.
