No need to cut and paste or anything like that. It couldn't be simpler.

Let's say the email has gone back and forth a few times and there are three vertical lines.

After you hit reply or forward, highlight the whole email. Then hold down the option/command keys and click on the apostrophe key. Every time you hit the apostrophe key you'll get rid of one more in the series of quote lines.

There's a similar trick in iOS but you can just Google it. That's how I found out how to do it in Apple Mail.

Hope this helps!

If you are doing this on an iPhone:

For forwarding or replying to an email without the Blue Vertical line to the left of the text...

- Open the email

- Select Forward or reply (this will open a new window)

- Select All of the text in the new email.

- In the pop-up bar that says "cut, copy, paste" select the right arrow for more options.

- Select Quote Level

- Select Decrease

Voila!

Hi - I stumbled on the same question and think that I found a simple solution:

I found the icon for 'indent' on the line with mail formatting icons; it is rightmost on the line below

User uploaded file

Suboptions are:

User uploaded file

I found that the vertical line disappears when you (first) select the lines for which you want the vertical line to disappear, then (second) select "Indent" > "Outdent". For reference - the Mail app is version 10.3 on my MacOS Sierra.

I hope this is still of interest/useful to others. Kind regards,

Jacques
