Drawing a flight path on a map

I have an atlas picture where I would like to add a flight path from Copenhagen to Boston to use in a slideshow I am creating in Aperture. Has anybody any ideas how this can be done.

kind regards

A simple map you can create in Aperture using the "Journal" book theme or the "Photo Essay" theme.

Both these themes include maps; You can mark places on these maps and connect the places with arrows in the map options. These maps fit nicely in with the map style used in the "Places" Slideshow theme.

After creating a book page with maps print it to pdf and reimport it to Aperture as a jpeg.

If you have iMovie you can do the same in iMovie and animate the flight along the path.

If I understand you have a map image that you want to draw lines on and then use that iage in an Aperture slideshow. Correct? Is then map image in Aperture already?

You will need to use an external editor for this as Aperture doesn't include this capability. Depending on how complicated you want to get you can go from somethign like Preview which has the ability to add lines to an image all the way up to PhotoShop.

Once you have the flight path draw import the image into Aperture and use it in your slideshow.

An example of whats possible in Preview. The only draw back is the lack of curved lines.

In Slideshows and Books, also in iMovie you are reduced to the built in maps, and there are not many options, and they are not very detailed. 😟

You might use Gnuplot, to draw interpolated, smooth curve onto a map image or any of the mapping tools - GMT, open street maps, Google Earth (Pro?)

I like to use Quartz Composer, to project maps onto spheres and to add and animate graphic elelements: To draw a flight path I would compute the intersection between a plane thru the earth's center and the surface of the earth.

Yiu are welcome.

enjoy your virtual flight.

Can you suggest some music I can use as a theme for the slideshow? I have thought of using instumentals for example the themes from The Last of the Mochicans and Braveheart to start with.

To suggest music is very difficult - it is a question of taste. So just some general advice.

  • Instrumental music is better than vocals.
  • The overall atmosphere and mood of the music should matcht the atmosphere and mood of your slideshow.
  • Use suspence accents and dramatic accents sparingly in the soundtrack - you will have to get the timing right if the soundtrack has a lot of dramatic accents - otherwise the music will play a fortissimo drum solo while you are showing a quite lake in the evening sun.

Movie soundtracks are not bad as background tracks, i.e. the introductions.

I like to use some classical symphonies from the 19th century, they are relatively quiet in most parts, but not so sedate that they are putting the audience to sleep. For example

Edvard GRIEG(1843-1907), Peer Gynt Suite no 1, Op. 46: no 1, Prelude "Morning", goes well with any road movie showing the scenery.

I guess i should use sideshows more!

Léonie do you know if you can use your own map images or are you forced to use what's in the theme?

Just looked in Aperture and I don;t seem to have those themes, are those part of the iPhoto '11 package?

Never mind just realized you said they were book themes, not slideshow themes,

Hi

I would really like to thank both of you for helping me. I have tried Aperture books and iMovie both are just what I was lokking for, but iMovie is more fun.

Making a slide show of our recent trip to the USA. We drove from Boston to San francisco in 5 weeks. Can you suggest some music I can use as a theme for the slideshow? I have thought of using instumentals for example the themes from The Last of the Mochicans and Braveheart to start with. I will need about 20 theme tunes for my different slideshows.

Again thankyou for the help especially LeoieDF, because other times I have had a question you have been the first to reply with a solution to the problem

Many Thanks
