Music App Crashes with iTunes Match Turned On?

With iTunes Match enabled on both my iPhone 4 and iPod Touch the Music App crashes repeatedly...

On each device the Music App crashed hard enough that I had to do a hard reset, reinstall the iOS software and restore my content from a backup. Other times the Music App crashes and I have to close the app and restart it more than ten times before it opens with out crashing. This makes listing to music near impossible.

Other issues with iTunes Match enabled on my iOS devices include sluggish Music App performance with constant freezes, some songs not downloading then working a few days later, and massive battery drain. None of these things happen with iTunes Match off.

Anyone else experiencing this?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1

I had this happen on a buddy's phone the other day. I think what the problem is that when you initially turn on match if your on 3g data and not wifi as we was it just strains the ram on the phone and it shuts off. What I had to do to get it to stop was go under settings>music and toggle the show all music off and then music app will open.

Go back and toggle it back on and the app will work fine.

After match finishes its intial download of information to your phone I believe it will stop doing it. My buddy hasn't complained about it anymore anyways.

Let me know.

My iTunes app crashes when match is matching. It seems to be related to something that is plugged into the machine when it's in my office (configs below) Any ideas?

Jan 23, 2012 8:54 AM in response to Michael Allbritton

I have looked through other threads and found no solution. Right now I can't even open my music app on my iPhone. This problem only gets worse when you download more songs to your iDevice. There are no solutions except not use iTunes Match. This is unfortunate. One work around is to shut off iTunes Match then turn it back on just to get the app to open. This has only worked a few times for me, sometimes leading to a complete reinstall of iOS. If it does work I have to wait as my iCloud library is reloaded onto my iPhone. This can take awhile on 3g. But this is all pointless because it will crash again.

I now just hope Apple will fix this with an update. I can't imagine I am the only one who wants to download thousands of songs onto their iPhone using iCloud. If anyone is experiencing crashing of their music app on an iOS device while using iTunes Match please drop a note here...

yup me too my music app is crashing all the time on my 4s.. super annoying. im also having trouble downloading music to the memory on my phone gets stuck in the processing phase of the download, i have to do a hard start, and then bring it back up then it downloads fine, get about 10 songs downloaded then i have to repeat the process.affraid im going to fry somthing on my phone with all the starts im doing. realy hope they fix this soon.

Jan 23, 2012 9:56 AM in response to Michael Allbritton

So you are thinking this is a problem with just my iPhone, some sort of corruption that comes back when I restore from a backup. Interesting. Although I have not done a restore and setup as a new device, I my have doubts. Here is why...

I have an iPod Touch that has the same problems. I have never used a backup from my iPhone to restore the iPod. The crashing seems to show up after thousands of songs are downloaded. Crashing does not occur with iTunes Match turned off. I will try to set up my iPhone as new device and see if it works, but this is very time consuming. It will be a few days before I can be without my phone while I do this. Again I have my doubts since I have two separate devices with the same problems.

Jan 25, 2012 5:58 AM in response to absarokabeartooth

My Music apps on iPhone 4/iPad 2 have also been sluggish and annoying since turning on iTunes match. I don't think they've been crashing as severely as yours, but still...

I've tried toggling playing only local content, but that didn't seem to make much difference. Also, it seems worse on my (Wi-Fi only) iPad 2 than on the iPhone.

I'm also having the issue where album art shows up sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't, but that doesn't bug me as much as not being able to simply navigate through the Music app's interface smoothly.

Oh - and this is somewhat unrelated, but what happened to Genius playlists since the introduction of iTunes Match?

Oct 8, 2012 2:48 AM in response to absarokabeartooth

With iTunes Match and the Music App performing very well, Michael has a good point. Setting up the devices with a full restore and configure as a 'new device' will cure the issue.

There are gremlins about but with clean installs and configuring in good communications environments will result in a working solution. The golden rule is to work one step at a time - so ensure your main computer library is stable, that you have a full secure backup - then work one device at a time, confirming appropriate performance on each device before moving to the next.
