AirPort won't turn on unless restarted, then causes computer to freeze

I tried various fixes for that posted from around the internet,

Please detail all you have done to resolve your issue. Need this information so that the users can avoid the "been there, done that" scenario type responses. This is to avoid repeating the troubleshooting you may have already tried. Thank you.

My 2009 Macbook Pro 2.53 Intel Core 2 Duo has been doing this same thing. At first I thought it was a hard drive failure. I was getting hangs (the mac freezing up) and slower boot time, sluggish reaction, airport not working...So, i replaced the hard drive and the sata cable and reinstalled OSX fresh. After backing up my files with Time Machine of course. When i tried to do a system restore of my old system....the problem happened again!

So after another re-install, this time of the un-updated 10.6 (the one that comes with your computer), I did another update to 10.6.8....and the machine hung again, and the airport died. Everything else worked fine... So, i did a repair of the Disk Permissions with Disk Utility and that seems to have fixed the problem. Granted that was about 3 minutes ago.....but at least airport is now working and i have no hangs on startup. So---my next step is to try and install the 10.6.8 v1.1- that i've heard also fixes this problem.

So, you might try fixing Disc permissions or at least running a verification to see if anything is a-miss.

And try downloading the 10.6.8 v1.1 (found here) and see if that works....

I'll keep you posted if mine bites the dust again.

Fraser......I have the EXACT same Mac and year as yours.....and the EXACT same PROBLEM word for word! I have tried the verify and repair under disk utility and it worked for a day and the problem has returned. I will add this problem started directly after an Apple update. Has anyone figured this out yet? I am only running version 10.5.8

Change your router channel number. Most times this works & is all you have to do.

System Preferences>Network

Click the Assist Me button.

In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

Exact samething has been happening to my machine. Bought my macbook pro at the exact sametime as well. Same speces and all. Did the disk repair worked for a second and then came right back within minutes. I also bumped my machine back down did a fresh install and it worked fine. But when I did the updates that was it. It started to frezze all over again. I'm going to give your fix a try babyboomer.

Unfortunately I need to report this fix did not work for me I called Linksy yesterday and all is fine with my router and all other Apple gadgets like Ipad and Touches all connect. I'm finding the problem seems to occur when you MOVE your laptop....like the motion sensor bumps you off and freezes.I must too point out that our edition of Macbook pro has the faulty gfx card that is sautered to the logicboard. I have gone through 3 power cords that show absolutely NO wear and tear...and a bulging battery.A VERY hot machine that burns my legs through a lap cushion.My laptop is gently used...there is nothing but photos on it...other than that my HD is empty.If I haven't mentioned previously...my problems began when I did an update. I've had nothing but problems with this machine and am deeply disappointed in this product. I could have bought a new $500 computer every year and just toss them away....this is so not cool for such an expensive investment. Let me know how you made out Sliq77

I'm a tech but I've been mainly dedicated to PCs. I have recently made the migration to MAC in the last five years. I have one old powerpc G5 which works fine. So I picked up this new macbookpro mainly for video editing but obviously when I have work and I'm moving around from location to location I'd like to have my wireless working. The strange thing is last night I turned it on and it worked for at least 40mins with no issues (Usually frezzes in 20). Then all of a sudden it froze and I rebooted and the airportcard was gone. Question though, is this a well know fact that this edition of Macbook pro has a faulty gfx card. And also are you sure its the GFX card if the airport actually is the only thing failing.

For my machine at least when the airport card is on the frezze occurs within a 30min time spand. When the airport is off my machine runs fine I just have to plug in the ethernet cable in and I"m fine. I will run some more test on my machine tonight to double check but if this is the case this really *****. Also what you mentioned in regard to heating up is absoultely true my machine turns into a microwave. For such an expensive machine and with all the important apps I have on it (FC7, Adobe master suite) I'm really disappointed.

I have no idea if the problem is due to this GFX card or if Airport has something to do with logicboard....either way...the two are connected. However, the more I read about it the more I'm convinced that all my problems are due to this. A class action lawsuit against Nividia was won....Apple has replaced some customers cards and not others. The faulty card (from what I've been reading) usually leads to replacement of the logicboard(GFX is sautered to this) due to some paste that it is sealed with, which in turn, causes a zillion problems... overheats and sizzles the board.Some people have taken the board out and baked it to get rid of this paste. Our power cord, plugs into the logicboard area of the computer, does it not? And this is where my heat is the most intense(top of keyboard where screen folds down) My suspicion of our current problem lies in the sensor motion going, is this in the locicboard?.... I am not a tech....just a very frustrated Macbook Pro owner who has had absolutely no help from Apple when I phoned them. The bulging battery has also led to the expansion of my touchpad, internally messing it up. How do you go through 3 power cords when the laptop has never left a desk? I am unwilling to buy another battery because this machine is too hot and I don't need a battery to bulge again and do further damage or even worse...catch fire. Please let me know if you come up with a solution Sliq...I'm ready to toss this expensive doorstop out the window.

HUH.......just noticed I no longer hear the fan *sigh...slow slow painful death.....

It seems like I'll have to bring my machine in to an authorized apple store. I spoke with an apple rep and she told me that if that's the issue more then likely its something to do with the logic board and whenever you get to that point it's probably gonna cost you. Question for Apple why would the board cost more then the whole system? Now after speaking with the rep and being told I'm basically screwed. I asked her what if I brought this machine in. Would apple take it and give me money towards a new one she said yes. I went to the site and yeah they'll give you money towards a new one" http://store.apple.com/us/browse/reuse_and_recycle" take a look at the link and see how much. Yes this doesn't seem good at all. But an interesting thing happened. I called the authorized dealer up and the person on the phone told me they had the same issue and it's a well know issue. She said they fixed hers in a few minutes. So I'll be bring mine by and maybe I'll have some luck and it won't be as bad as replacing the LB. Have to tell you though I remember my brother buying one of the first apple computers, it was great and lasted forever. Now a 1700 dollar laptop can't even last more then 3years not cool.

Well geez...that sounds promising Sliq! Please tell me how you make out and see if you can get the "answer" as to what they did to fix it... if it works. I'm almost embarrassed to go to my Mac fixer tech guy......he keeps telling me the same things over and over...."ran a diagnostic and she's good..nothing wrong" **shaking head** Trained monkey response I assume...never admit anything to do with that graphics card!

I just hit that link for the recycle /trade in thing.....my comp is so p00pie they won't even list it as wanting it for junk! HAHAHAHAHAHA I have a 2.5 MHZ 17 inch..I don't see it on the list

OMG Baby Boomer......I retried this method and picked a different channel than the last time I tried it and...maybe I'm being premature in my happiness but YAY...I think this attempt is working!!! I am moving my computer and it isn't bumping me offline or freezing up! Again ty for your knowledge! 🙂 🙂 🙂
