2 TB WD "unreadable" (ticking)

grrrr. i have two - 2 TB WD "My Book Essential" external drives that i bought within the last four months with one running my Time Machine backup and the other partitioned into two 1 TB partitions and /one/ of these is running a clone of my drive via CCC.

I went to store something temporarily on the 1 TB partition, saw that it was not mounted on my desktop with an icon and unplugged and re-plugged it in. i get this error upon plugging it in:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15285654/Screen%20shot%202012-01-19%20at%2002.29.41%20PM .png

I put my hand on it just now and I can feel the whirring similar to the other drive but there is also a methodical ticking that I can feel.

I guess this is the proverbial time bomb and it has already gone off or is this trouble-shoot-able?

Thanks.

Could be. Listen to the sounds on this page and see if it is one of them. Of course with that drive being almost new it is still under warrantee.

WOW. what a fantastic site.

THANKS for the link. Man, those guys are pretty great...

Sounding to me like it is unstable heads.

I took Ricks great advice and opened here in Disk Utility and it shows the WD drive (sort of an orange icon) but not what I normally see under my drives (sort of a blue icon). I never set down to figure out what this distinction was and I guess I am interested in knowing if anyone knows.

Anyway, she shows up as "Mac OS Extended (Jounaled)" and down at the bottom it says it is "Partition Map Scheme: Unformatted". It also shows USB connection and 2 TB down at the bottom as well. "Name" is untitled?

Anyone know if there is more info I should provide and/or what a good course of action is?

Odd, I am listening to it again - and I am not hearing the sort of "clunky" "tripping" sound that seemed like it was the same as the WD: "Western Digital desktop drive with unstable heads clicks a few times and stops spinning". The difference with mine being that it is still spinning...

Should I reformat, re-back up and ask WD for a replacement? Thoughts?

THANKS

Hi Rick.

Thanks here. Fuller response above.

Can I please just ask you to elaborate a little on the difference between being mechanically sound, not mounting, not mounting to the desktop and/or being corrupted?

I mean, I sort of understand all this but being corrupted basically means it is trashed so it doesn't matter if it mounts and not mounting means something that doesn't necessarily mean that your data isn't there or that it is not a good drive...? Can you walk me through this a little??

Jon,

Great post!

First - Mac OS gives a drive a different icon when it is on an external bus and is ejectable. That is why this drive has an orange icon.

Next, that you see the drive in Disk Utility means it is connecting. THis is good, this probably means the drive itself is fine but the partition map/index is corrupted beyond the ability of Disk Utility/Mac OSX to mount it properly. Disk Utility is fairly weak that way - small damage or error is enough to make it unreadable and unfixable by Disk Utility.

Also, the drive is listed as having a format - Mac OS Extended, then DIsk Utility also states it is not formatted. DU is confused :^)

If this drive has data on it that you need, then you will probably be best served buying Disk Warrior and attempt to repair the index.

If the drive's data is backed up - and ALL data should be backed up always - then you should be able to erase this disk again in Disk Utility and just go back to using it.

the number of people with issues with external drives, with Lion or whatever the latest OS and updates, drive not mounting via Firewire but does with USB (or reverse)

WD sometimes makes the drive part of the enclosure meaning you can't pull the drive and use it in another case or install it inside your Mac. That would help and to eliminate the case and interface.

Maybe the case doesn't pass along the drive partition type or status.

You should always have multiple backups (and maybe not all WD MyBook), you'll see that they sell Mac versions, which while nice, have to wonder what difference in platform and support.

WD MyBook + TimeMachine with Green 2TB may not be best combination.

I would assume the "mac version" is formatted with HFS+ and contains OS X versions of the back up software no one ever uses.

Though along those lines, I remember back in the 68030 CPU days ordering a 1GB external SCSI drive and being offered the choice between a "Windows" version or a "Mac" version that cost 50$ more. Not being able to think of a difference, I ordered the cheaper Windows version and found that it was in fact formatted for the Macintosh once it was delivered.

Back on topic, WD quality has plummeted of late. But then so has Seagate and Maxtor. At a loss to find a good drive maker anymore.

It was kind of a rhetorical question. Like you, I just couldn't locate a reason, other than some marketing scheme, that the buyer would have an advantage in a Mac version of a Firewire or USB drive. As you stated so well, I also would never trust/use a push button - run backup utility built into the firmware on a drive.

Hard to take the recent flooding in Asia out of the picture but I have no issue with WD line of drives (VelociRaptor, Black)

I would hesitate (never say never) use a WD MyBook on a Mac. some have had trouble with "Green" drives inside their Mac Pro (but not all and some even use 2-3 in RAID sets), or Green drives tending to not stay connected to TimeMachine. Or that the IO subsystem seems to change all the time and how the OS talks to external drives.

Formatting for the user is almost meaningless and don't think that is the difference. WD software like SeaTools often cause trouble? with OS X (and not needed?).

Firewire on Macs could be different and maybe the bridge. Do they use Oxford bridge or some other?

Agreed. I am loath to take a hard stand AGAINST a given brand name, they might be making the best product available next week. I have never liked WD Green drives, but my opinion is that all Green drives are pure politically correct marketing BS. No engineer would task himself to design a drive that is not optimum at storing data as the primary design criteria. Setting a goal that your drive uses less electricity as the first goal and reliably stores data as the secondary purpose is, to me, counter to my needs as the end user.

Beyond higher failure rates, biggest problem we see with Green drives is in RAID - especially hardware RAID. Green drives from any manufacturer have features built into their firmware to sleep without regard to what computer settings are, that alone is enough to cause a RAID card fits. Also we never know when a given setup will have mounting issues with Green drives. Seems to go along with the sleep issue - unpredictable. Enough so that we avoid them for the most part.

hi hatter.

thanks for this and for your other help on the internal drive purchase earlier in the month..

so - am i correct in gathering that you are not happy with the /green/ drive aspect of this combo?:

"WD MyBook + TimeMachine with Green 2TB may not be best combination."

I mean, I gather you are saying that you know for a fact that the WD 2 TB is a green drive and is there a way for me to check this?

NORMALLY, I would have a mix and match situation here in terms of different Manufacturers for this data but I had MaxPerks credits and these things were on sale and I had to move the Time Capsule to solely backup the MacBook Pro...and on and on.

Anyway, I'd love to know if this set of WD is thought of less favorably. Actually, I'd really like to know about this...

Thanks as always.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the help here. Always really fantastic to get.

So - I have been looking for an excuse to buy Disk Warrior if just for the occasions when I may be traveling.

Can I please get the lowdown from you on what I should do here? I mean, this is obviously somewhat concerning as I have multiple backups but both the TC and the Clone on my desktop are run to these two drives. ALSO, since I partitioned the one that is not /working/ (the non-TM drive) - there was 1 TB of space on this drive for temporary storage or for "you should delete this but check it before you do" information which was /not/ getting backed up elsewhere. I mean, this 1 TB was basically /extra/ network space and as such I am not totally sure what was on it. If it was there it was likely not mission critical but you never know.

So, I gather I should buy DW and put myself through the paces of learning how to recover a partitioned drive and at the very least I will have this aspect under my belt?

Also, I did not quite catch the "write a pass of zeroes during the erase" point you made. Is this worthwhile enough for me to ask for a little more of an explanation in order to try this as I recover from this - apparent corruption of my partitions (I think that is what this is, yes)?

THANKS
