The backlight keys are located where the F5 & F6 keys are located. To control the backlight keys you simply hit these keys. To hit F5 & F6 keys you hit the fn key along with F5 or F6. I just wanted to clarify that in case you were hitting the fn key along with the F5 & F6 keys. Did you try rebooting? Sometimes that helps with weird anomalies like this. If your backlight keyboard still doesn't work then I would advise you to set up an appointment with the Genius Bar at your nearest Apple Retail Store.

I just got my Macbook Pro back from Apple replacing the motherboard. A few days later, trying to use it in a darkened room, I noticed that the keyboard backlight wasn't going. So I tried all the techniques given here, even resetting the SMC a few times, no luck.

I opened up the case, using the iFixit screenshots (from http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Unibody-Mid-2010-Logic-Board-Rep lacement/3097/2 ) to tell me where the keyboard backlight cable would be connected, and what do you know? The repairers haven't even left that cable in the machine, let alone just forgotten to plug it in or something.

So, bottom line: IF your computer is recently back from repair, it MAY be that they haven't connected the keyboard backlight cable.

My computer now has to go back to Apple to fix, again. (I'm not blaming anyone: these things are pretty darned fiddly to fix, and anyone could leave out one tiny little ribbon cable... I just wish that it hadn't happened.)

This just happened to me too, opened the case and used the guide you provided the link for and realized they also left the cable out completely as well. Taking the computer back tomorrow. I can see forgetting a cable like that, maybe. But last time I took the computer in, what's worse is these guys left out a screw and one was in crooked and scratched up my furniture. Another screw eventually fell out. Took it and my computer back for them to fix that, as well as the crooked one. Now that's just sloppy work.

Thanks for the guide, it was a big help for me.
