Is it possible to remotely delete files on a MacBook Pro?

If a MacBook Pro is stolen, is it somehow possible to be able to delete and scrub all files on the laptop remotely? When I mean scrub I mean delete the actual files right off the disk, not just the directory indexes to the files.

I am not sure how this might work, for example if the thief reconnects to the Internet at some stage Apple can detect the serial number as reported stolen and it goes to work with deleting all files? Can the location of the MacBook be detected in some way like an iPhone can?

Alternatively, can there be a password added to the laptop such that if it is entered incorrectly too many times it starts the deletion process?

Any thoughts around data security in general for lost laptops would be greatly appreciated. I know cloud technology reduces issues around local data getting lost, but even using cloud technology sometimes there is a local copy of the data.

Kind regards

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.2)
