How do I restore my music to my iPhone?

Yesterday, I upgraded to IOS 5. Before I did, I "backed up" my iPhone per instructions.

Now all my music is gone.

Including my ringtones.

The only instructions in Apple's forums is "hey, don't worry, bud, all of that music you purchased for iTunes is available to you still."

Fat lot of good that does me -- I don't purchase music through iTunes, at least not often.

I had about 100 songs from my own mp3 library plus custom made ringtones.

They were synced off a laptop that died a year ago so that particular set of music is no longer stored on a computer.

How do I get my music back? Or am I just screwed by Apple's poor instructions and planning and I have to take hours to painstakingly redo everything?

Sorry, you can't. The instructions clearly warned you that this update was an erase & restore. The failure to not properly backup your content rests with you and you alone.

I did do I proper back up, as I explained above. I followed the back up prompts in iTunes. So where's my music? So it rests with Apple and Apple alone.
