permanently deleting files

does emptying trash permanently delete files? can they be recovered in any way?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Finder>Preferences>Advanced>Empty Trash Securely.

As wjosten indicates, DO NOT USE THAT DISK, the more you do the greater the possibility that your data will be overwritten and permanently gone. This is just one option you may try:


www.osxdatarecovery.org


This is not a recommendation. I have never faced this situation. Enter into google 'data recovery' and you will get other options as well. It is not likely that any of them will be free.
