Set Permissions on folders on FIREWIRE drives

Hello,

I have a problem and hope someone could give me his help.

I have to share a folder LOCATED on a EXTERNAL FIREWIRE drive on my LAN. The problem is that I set the permissions for a specific user on read only, and it doesn't works. I mean that the Sharing Control Panel reports that the specific user can only read but, on the workstation of that user, I can create/modify/delete everything inside that folder (that are the objects that I need to protect).

This doesn't happen if the shared folder is located on internal drives. On internal drives everything works properly.

The Mac are PowerMac G5 (PowerPc) running Leopard 10.5.8

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Marco

Any news on this? I just ran into this (on 10.7.4) and I could simply not believe this!!! How can any "server" software so utterly and completely fail in the most basic functionality?!?

This really, seriously puts a lot of our setup in jeopardy. And on top of that, the reason we even switched to this setup in the first place is because Lion has another as-of-yet major bug in its SMB inplementation!! (Not any other OS has this problem, incl. up to the latest version of Snow Leopard, with any of the same files)

It results in random files being "hidden" when copied to our Linux-based solution.... (even when using the terminal & CHMOD, CHFLAGS etc., it reverts back after a while, plus the recursive-ness of chflags is not working right either which makes the fixing very time-intensive...

If Lion is still so buggy, I cannot begin to imagine how bad things are going to be with the first release of Mountain Lion...
