why is make and gcc not found after installing Xcode 4.2.1

I did an upgrade initially and have both versions of Xcode on my Lion installation. I cloned my drive, then did a clean install of Lion.

I currently have developer folders 4.1 and 3.2.6.

Xcode works fine in compiling my C++ code (I am a student learning programming) but I can no longer compile in the terminal. Actually, I have no tools available in the terminal. Typing gcc gives: no command found. When I installed Snow Leopard, everything was there. Why not now for Lion?

I guess I am asking what should I do. I don't have access to my external that has a copy of the Xcode 4.2.1 installation.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2), 8GB

I think the obvious suggestion is to grab XC 4.2.1 from the Mac App Store and install fresh...

With so many other things broken, I wasn't sure if this was normal behavior or not. I have seen many reports online of the same thing.

I will try uninstalling and re-installing.

if anyone else is having this problem and has to uninstall, use the uninstall scripts located in the /Developer/Library folder to get rid of everything.

What else is broken?

It is normal behavior. Xcode installs links to the command-line developer tools in /usr/bin. When you install a new operating system, those links get wiped out.

The 'About Xcode' readme included in a 'normal' install has complete details on how to uninstall for that version.

I'm not a big fan of Lion. I like Snow Leopard better. My system was faster and there are a few issues I don't like, I wouldn't necessarily say broken. Right off the bat, I had to change my mouse scroll wheel direction. I don't like the menu icons in finder nor the locations.. and I my file extensions on my desktop (such as pdf) randomly are not presented correctly.

But I like the integrated feel of Xcode 4.2, so I jumped ship lol.

Now that I got this fixed I can work on my programming assignments. It's ok...but its growing on me.
