On opening longtime Mail app it comes up with a new Welcome message. Asks: import of all messages. Click: yes and it appears to do just that. Then typical Mail window appears and little rainbow 'busy' wheel appears and spins and spins and spins and spins and............CRASH?!

Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Enter the application name in the “Filter” text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any -- the text, please, not a screenshot
Then, still in the Console window, look under "User Diagnostic Reports" for crash logs related to the application. Select the most recent one and post the contents -- again, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report.

Hi there
I looked under User Diagnostic Reports but there are no crash logs relating=
to Mail. Basically the program just sits with the rainbow wheel spinning f=
or infinitum. None of the messages appear despite the messages appearing to=
download and a confirmation message to say they have done so successfully.
Could uninstall - without losing old messages - then reinstall. If so how?

Quit Mail. In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-H to open your home folder. From that folder, delete the following item:
Library/Caches/com.apple.mail
Relaunch Mail and test.
Did as instructed as far as Caches, but found no com.apple.mail. Found some similarly named but not that one.

The Mail cache folder is right where I said it was. Please delete it and try Mail again.
I appreciate your help but I have gone back and looked agin in: Library/Cache but found no com.apple.mail item. I know you don't like screen shots but at least the one below will prove that I'm not being a total numpty!

I can't see your screenshot, but if you're not finding the folder, it's because you're looking in the wrong Library -- the one at the top level of your boot volume -- rather than the one in your home folder. Did you press the key combination shift-command-H to open the home folder?
Looked in Library/Cache at what I think is the 'top level of my boot volume' related to Hardrive, as well as the Library/Cache related to me, and again found no file/item called: mail.apple.com. Just repeated a full search of Mac for said item and still no joy.

That's because there is no item with that name, and that's not the name of the item I suggested you delete. I think it would be best if you had someone to help you in person. Make a "Genius" appointment at the nearest Apple Store. It's a free service. They'll get you straightened out. Back up all data before you go.
Thanks for your help. I realise that I had not looked for the right item but have since done so: com.apple.mail and still no joy. Looked in all places you had suggested but no joy. Including search of whole computer - nothing showed up.

Getting to a Mac store for me is actually pretty difficult. Any further suggestions would be very gratefully received.
There is a folder named "com.apple.mail" in the Caches subfolder of the Library subfolder of your home folder. I've proven that it's there, and that it's not hidden. I've told you how to find it. If you really can't see that folder in the Finder, then you have much worse problems than the one you described in your original message. Without being able to see for myself what's going on, I don't know where to begin or what to tell you. It doesn't help you if I'm working in the dark. If you don't want to go to an Apple Store, find a local Mac consultant to help you. Not every problem is amenable to being solved by questions and answers.
