text substitution stopped working

Text substitution (Sys Prefs > Language & Text > Text) was working fine for me since Lion came out but it has now stopped working, in Mail anyway. No amount of turning it off, then on again, rebooting, resetting, etc seems to fix the problem. Auto-correct as I type is still turned on in Mail prefs, as it always has been. Adding a new text sub string doesn't work either - it simply seems to have become disabled.

Any ideas?

THANK YOU ! yes. This solved my problem.

— Though, I dont know how it could get turned off? I dont think I did that. Is it just off by default in 10.9? — Strange...
