Where does my screen shot go with 10.6 (it use to go to desk top, but now I can't find them)

Before I upgraded to 10.6, if I took a screen shot (either command, control, shift 3 or 4) the image was placed on the desktop.

Now I don't know where it goes..

What was so simple and straightforward is now multi step. I use computers as a tool I am not a 'geek' and don't understand all the lingo.
