URGENT. Installing OS9 with OSX 10.4.11

How do I install OS9 (Classic) on to the Mac OSX 10.4.11 system? I have the Tiger install DVD but cannot see how to set up the OS9. I have got as far as almost reformatting and re-installing the whole system but cannot see the OS9 option anywhere.

Thanks in anticipation.

Which exact PowerMac?

So we know more about it...

At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: eMac

Model Identifier: PowerMac6,4

Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.2)

Processor Speed: 1.42 GHz

Number Of CPUs: 1

L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB

Memory: 2 GB

Bus Speed: 167 MHz

Boot ROM Version: 4.9.2f1

Do you have the Original OS Install Discs? Do you have any OS9 Install Discs?

Do you have another Mac with an operating OS9.2 version on it?

OS 9.x is not included on the Tiger 10.4 installer. It's only included on the Install/Restore disc that came with the Mac. Sometimes you can use an OS 9 install disc.

Copy the System Folder from another Mac that has OS 9.1 (or better with 9.2.1 or 9.2.2) installed. A USB thumb dive works great for this. Transfer the folder to your Mac. It won't interfere with your OS X system which is in a folder titled System.

When you formatted the hard drive you must also check install OS 9 drivers for classic to work.

Cheers, Tom 😉

I have the original OSX 10.3 CDs and the 10.4 install DVD.

If I reinstall the OSX 10.3 system and add the Classic System, can I then upgrade to 10.4 using the DVD without losing OS9?

Thanks in anticipation.

Best regards

If these are the original Discs with OS9 you shouldn't lose anything if there;s an OS9 Install option, but going backwards in OSX would require erasing everything, but as I recall theres some OS9 Install feature on the Disc that might not require even going back on OSX, since G5s cannot boot to OS9, just use it in the Classic emulation mode.

Managed to copy an OS9 system folder across to the iMac, restarted and it worked! Have taken the opportunity to back up the OS9 system to a CD just in case for the future.

Don't know if any of you are also totally p*****d off with the new MS Office and other software. The best word processing package was MS Word 5.1 and the best spreadsheet was Office 98 Excel. The nice thing about them was that, being a touch typist, you could use the keys very fast for the commands instead of having to use the mouse and menus all the time. Why can't they reproduce these for the new OSX systems?

Thanks guys for your enormous assistance.

Well, Office & Word always sucked imo, but yes, thoe were the best, & it seems all later SW was bloated, lacking & far too complicated. 😟

I still use Ataris & Atari Enulators to get all my real work done believe it or not.
