How delete a file in mac os x?

In the finder, select the file by clicking on it. Hold down the command key and hit the delete key.

Alternatively, you may hold down the control key, click on the item with your mouse, and select Move to Trash from the pop-up menu.

• Select the file or files and press COMMAND-DELETE.
• Select the file or files and drag to the Trashcan in the Dock. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the Trashcan and select Empty to complete the removal.
• Select the file or files and select Move To Trash from the Finder's File menu.
• Select file r files, CTRL- or RIGHT-click on selection and select Move To Trash from the context menu.

You can also go into System Preferences and make a new keyboard shortcut. I turned one of the function keys into a "Move To Trash" key.

1. No need to use the mouse for something that should be simple and quick.

2. Single button press just like in Windows.

Finally a solution that makes sense! I can't seem to make it work though. Here's what I've done so far:

1. Went to system prefs > keyboard > keyboard, checked "use F1, F2, etc.. as standard function keys.."
2. Went to keyboard shortcuts > Application Shortcuts, clicked on "+"
3. Selected "Finder", entered "Move To Trash" (no ") and F12.
4. Tested it. It opened the dashboard instead.
5. Went back to "keyboard shortcuts", found F12 already assigned to open the dashboard, unchecked it.
6. Tested again. After a short "beep", the last file in the folder became highlighted. That's it.
7. Tried with F1. Same thing. Changed "Finder" to "All applications". Same thing. "Help" doc was useless.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. If you do, please let me know. Thanks a lot.

(Note: there is no check box next to the shortcut I created)

Bring up a terminal window.

'cd' to the correct directory, then 'rm' the file

cd Documents/<dir>/

rm <filename>

As noted in yourother post,

Move To Trash should read Move to Trash, matching the menubar option.

This is not really the preferred way to delete files. 🙂

Err, we have graphical user interfaces these days!!!!!

Besides that, it seems like a lot of extra work when you can simply move or drag a file to the trash and not worry about mucking up something in the terminal. 😉
