Mac will not stay in sleep mode

My IMac running system 10.5.8 will not remain in sleep mode. I have tried closing all running applications and this makes no difference. After restarting the computer it seemed to function correctly for a short time then once again would not remain in sleep mode. The energy saver has no wake options set.

OK,

I looked at the process that you have running.

I see Norton auto protec. I know you said you tried disabling Norton but you should also try stopping this process.

Maybe it still runs when Norton is disabled,

An other suspicious process that I see is Speech Synthesis Server. It used to speak text out loud but also to listen to voice commands and that could be the source of your problem.

One more thing to check:

Did you check your startup items?

System Preferences:Accounts:Login Items

See what software is loading at startup.

Did you try stopping Speech Synthesis Server?

The Adobe Synchronizer is a networking agent that is used to build disconnection tolerant applications. The Synchronizer provides a local copy of data on a server so that applications can utilize it regardless of network connectivity. As data changes on the server, Synchronizer updates the local copy and as the user publishes changes made locally, Synchronizer makes the modifications to the server. If the client is disconnected from the network, Synchronizer will continue trying.

You could try removing it from startup list. (Select it and click on minus sign)

But I think Adobe auto repair will reinstall it.

Give it a try.

I did remove it and it does not seem to make a difference. I can't remember any more if I restarted after removing it but I will do that later (leaving for my volunteer hours at the Humane society now). The good news though is that the application Please Sleep seems to be working it now. It won't stay asleep if I try to use the power button or apple menu item, but when it reaches its time set in energy saver, it does go to sleep. So something has at least helped it that way. If that is the best I can do, I'll accept that but it would be nice to solve the real issue. Thanks again for all your help.

I've been having *exactly* the same problem you have and have tried all the fixes that had been suggested to you. RRFS gave me a suggestion that has solved the problem, at least for now (I'm wary of declaring complete success because the problem has been intermittent). RRFS sent me to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964. I have an Intel-based desktop Mac, so I followed these instructions:

Sorry, I hit "send" too soon. Here are the instructions:

1. Shut down the computer.

2. Unplug the computer's power cord.

3. Wait fifteen seconds.

4. Attach the computer's power cord.

5. Wait 5 seconds, and then press the power button to turn on the computer.

According to RRFS, it's important to following the directions to the letter, counting off the seconds. (I had tried shutting down the computer overnight, which didn't work.)

This worked for me. If you're still having the problem, maybe it'll work for you, too. Good luck.

I actuallly did have to unplug my computer and replug it in for a different issue. Either that is why it is going to sleep (for now) or because I used the Utilities Disk Utility to reset permissions. Or maybe the force is just with me for the present, who knows. But thanks for the suggestion. If it acts up again I will try the unplug thing.

My Mac had to go on a field trip to the Genius Bar at the local Apple store. It appears my genius guy fixed the problem by (1) turning off File Sharing (which I no longer need), (2) deleting the second account on my computer (which I didn't really need), and then restarting and resetting. I've had it home all afternoon and it goes to sleep (and stays asleep) upon command.

Here's one thing I learned while I was troubleshooting. You can see what's waking your computer up by going to Applications>Utilities>Console and clicking on "system log" under LOG FILES. If you make note of the exact time when you try to put the computer to sleep, you can check in the system log what happened at that moment. My Ethernet connection kept on waking up the computer, which is why the Apple genius figured it had something to do with file sharing. Maybe if I'd just logged out of the second account completely before returning to the home screen I wouldn't have had the problem.

Hope this helps.

The following article describes a way of finding of what is preventing your Mac from sleeping:

http://www.adeepbite.com/lion-seems-having-insomnia-it-doesnt-sleep-easily/

It does require delving into the terminal. If the Mac was clearer about what is preventing the Mac from sleeping in the main UI, then delving into the terminal shouldn't be necessary. For me this is an important usability problem.

One thing that you should check is if you activated 'internet sharing'. Although described in the system preferences, I doubt most people read the text to realise this will prevent sleep (me included).
