SxS cards crashing MBP

I use a Macbook Pro (3.1) running OSX Snow Leopard, Ver. 10.6.8. This is an older MBP with the slot34epress which accepts the Sony XDCAM SxS media. It reads the cards at quick speeds (eSATA) and is valuable to me in times I need to ingest media quickly. After upgrading to Snow Leopard, this feature no longer works. I get the top-to-bottom darkened screen, with a fatal error (written in several languages), asking to restart.

I've searched and haven't realy found a solution. I have the most recent Sony SxS drivers, and can still do this via USB (although much, much slower) but the problem began after upgrading to Snow Leopard. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a solution?
