Getting NY Times notifications when I don't want to

A while ago I turned off notifications from the NY Times (which I have a subscription to) but I'm still getting them. In Settings | Notifications, NYTimes is listed under "Not in Notification Center". Any ideas what could be going on? When I turn on the iPad from sleep mode, that's when I often get these little news alerts. I think these are called notifications; they're message boxes in the center of the display? Thanks for any help.

iPad 2, iOS 5.0.1

Thanks. I did that but it just takes you to the iPad's Settings | Notifications for the NYTimes.

Hmm...I see that even though "NYTimes" is listed under Not in Notification Center, I see that the Notification Center setting inside NYTimes is NOT set to OFF. I'll set that to OFF and see what happens.

There's another setting for NY Times notifications inside the app itself. Check that out.

Strange. You used to be able to turn Breaking News notifications on/off in the app itself. They must have removed it in a recent update. T was confusing.
