What does this symbol mean? At the top, right, of any page on my iPad on the menu bar, there is a little character that looks like an arrow turned about 45 degrees to the right of center. The character is next to and left of the percentage of charge on my ipad. What does it mean? (Sort of looks like a small paper airplane.) I've been fooling with the new iBooks. Does that have anything to do with it?

I think it's location service. Go into settings and then location services and have a look.
This "little paper aeroplane" is Location Service as mentioned by Marian.

No. I don't think so. Whatever I do with my rotation lock, that symbol is still there. However, it's not on my new iPad 2, which makes me wonder what it is and what it does.
Look at Diavonex's last response. It is the Location services symbol. Look at my screenshot and see if that is the same symbol that you are seeing. You turn it on in Settings>Location Services.
Unrelated to the OPs question....Are you testing iOS 6? Looks different than my Safari on iOS 5.1.1?
No. I am using iCab Mobile. Safari is way too limited for my taste. There as so many better browsers available in the App Store. iCab Mobile, Atomic, Dolphin, Mercury .... Check a couple of them out.
