On the side bar in Mail where the names of the different mailboxes are, there are now pictures of folders and wierd symbols that look like flying firds and footprints in the snow. Everything else is fine. I have no idea what happened. It looks as though my mail was hijacked by a sandscript peoples.

Cripes, never seen anything like that before!!!!!!???? Are you using IMAP, or POP3? If using IMAP log into your ISP's webmail server using your browser and see what the folder names look like on there.
Yes, I just did, and it is "normal" on line. I figured it was a Mail issue, but I couldn't find any direct "mail" discussions at apple.com...
Interesting, it looks vaguely Arabic or Farsi or Afghan or something like that. Might be worth going into your System Preferences and checking your language and text settings and seeing if anything like that might be selected in addition to English.
My Mailboxes lost it's words! Instead there are weird swooshes and loops instead of where the words "inbox" "sent", "drafts", etc. used to be.
