turn off find my mac on sold laptop

I sold my laptop recently but still see where it is located in my list of computers/phones when I look at find my mac. Is there a way of removing the offending computer from the list?

On the flip side, if I buy a second hand Iphone/laptop, how do I make sure that the previous owner isn't tracking my whereabouts?

Cheers

I should have said, the harddrive was repartitioned/reformatted and a completely fresh install put on before selling the laptop. So, find my mac must use something other than your cloud login which makes sense if you want to find a stolen laptop. However, i now want to remove this computer from my 'find my mac' and can't seem to find anywhere to do it.

Thanks
