Nothing has changed that would affect battery discharge, so if it was a problem it still is, and if it wasn't, it isn't. With every iPhone and every iOS version some people have either perceived or real problems with battery life. There seem to be more with the 4S, but it still isn't a big number. Battery problems fall into several categories:
- Expectations - The iPhone is not a phone, it is a very powerful pocket-sized computer that can make phone calls. It uses power like a computer, not a phone. So if you have never had a smart phone before the battery life will seem very short. Especially because you will spend the first few days or weeks enjoying it, which corresponds to using it, which drains the battery.
- More features - The 4S has more features than any previous iPhone. So if you've already had an iPhone the 4S will get shorter battery life than your previous iPhone. Sorry, it's the 2nd law of thermodynamics.
- iCloud - iCloud is a real time capability, and if you enable it iCloud will send and receive a lot of data. Which requires more power. If you've previously had an Exchange email account this will not be a surprise, but if you haven't...
- Something wrong - There are cases where rapid battery drain indicates something wrong with the phone or the phone's software. This is probably an issue in a minority of the complaints about short battery life, but it is nothing new. Every iPhone and every iOS version is susceptible to unusual conditions that can drain the battery. If this is the cause it can be fixed.
