detach clips from one another

how to I detach two layers of video from one another? It seems that whenever I drag a clip onto the timeline on a layer above another video (say a wide shot, then a tight shot), it seems to dig in and connect itself to the video below this.

I have spent hours trying to figure out how to turn this off...I don't understand why anyone would want this on. It is one of the most infuriating things I have ever come across in a pro application.

This is just one of the many unbelieveably frustrating things about FCP X over FCP 7.

I would really appreciate your help. If I can at least solve this problem, I can edit the way I normally should.

(I've read the white page, and understand the changes that were made...this version of iMovie PRO is cool, but far from being a usable linear editing platform.)
