epson printer utility3 "cannot open because of a problem"

I've had trouble printing with Epson printers:

Stylus Pro 3800, Stylus Photo 2200, Photoshop CS4. ie, missing paper profiles, posterized prints.

I trashed the Epson folder, installed updates from Apple and the correct driver from Epson website. Also reset printing syster, deleted and added printers.

Nothing works now! After I downloaded Printer Driver for Epson Pro 3800, I get message that epson printer utility3 "cannot open because of a problem"

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8), Epson Pro 3800 and Epson 2200

You mention deleting the Epson folder previously. Maybe this filter was not reinstalled by the driver from Apple or Epson. You can check its existence via the path shown in the error message. Note that the "PDFtoPDF2" is shown as an application so you will need to select Show Package Contents when you find this filter and want to check further down.

Okay. This log shows that the Printer Utility3, which is located in /Applications/epson/Epson Software/EPSON Printer Utility3.app/Contents/MacOS, is calling UtilityCore2, which should be in /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter/Libraries//UtilityCore2.framework/Version s/A, but it would appear that the file is not present.

I don't have experience with Epson drivers and supporting applications so I am not sure of what function this Printer Utility3, but it does appear to be the cause of your current problem. Maybe your combination of getting drivers from Apple as well as Epson is a contributor. I would be removing the Epson folder in Library/Printers and in Applications/Epson and just installing the driver provided by Apple for one of the two printers. I'm hoping this will stop the installation of the Epson utility in Applications and at least gets you printing again.

I looked at the path and found the Epson Printer Utility3 to be an older install, from Dec 9, 2010. It looks like an alias as it is 168KB.

These are pro printers, I use photoshop CS4. I need the Epson printer utility.

I did update the Apple Printer Utility, perhaps it is interfering with the Epson utlity?

Do you recommend that I remove the Apple Printer Utility?

I am going to try to reinstall the Epson Printer Utility. Can I trash this version, and reinstall Epson?

thank you

As I mentioned before, I don't know much about Epson products and supporting software. I would say that for managing paper catalogs and colour profiles, this utility is needed. But right now it appears to be causing the error when you print so personally I would try removing it just to see if you can print without error, not worrying about colour accuracy. If this does work then you can investigate if you need a later version or that you have a version of this utility that is meant for Lion. I would also suggest you contact Epson or check their website for any suggestions regarding this utility.
