You need the latest version of Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
I have a similar problem - wmv files are only producing audio, not video - the screen just stays black. I am using a MacBook running Lion, and all software (including Flip4Mac) is up to date. I also have Perian installed. These are only silly short movies, usually funnies, sent by friends. But my friends with PCs can play them and I can't. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks!
Not all Windows Media files can play on a Mac. So much easier if Windows users used Quicktime!
Download Flip4Mac WMV Player as mentioned above, but ALSO QuickTime 7.6.6 from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
It's default installation will be in your Utilities folder. Finally got to see all the .wmv files I have been receiving in emails since upgrading to Lion. Works just like it used to!
Thanks, buxwheat. That solved the problem!! All those wmv files play perfectly in QT 7.6. That raises the question of do I need QT 10 (which I guess came as part of Lion) as well as QT 7.6.6? It also begs the question of why QT 10 seems to be a retrograde step. Thanks again for your help!
No problem, been hunting for the solution since updating to Lion. As to QT 10: I thought about dumping it after 7.6.6 worked for me, but when I tried to delete it, I got this dialog box:
Apparently, it is needed for some reason. I also clicked on a .wmv file, then Apple-i to open up the info window.
I chose QuickTime Player 7 and used it to open all docs like this one. Works great.

WMV(Windows Media Video) format is Microsoft's proprietary video file format, Apple's Mac OS X system and QuickTime player don't support this format.
There are two way:
One is using VLC to play WMV files on Mac.
The other is converting WMV files to Mac more compatible formats like MP4, MOV.
