I started having this problem recently on an itermittant basis ("Not charging" message in upper right corner, when plugged in to Apple's AC adapter). AC adapter & cords are apparently fine (will immediately test them with my wife's iPad the next time it happens). Rebooting the iPad helped one time but not another. After I noticed it started charging again after I turned off bluetooth, the next time it appeared (with bluetooth still off), I tried briefly (5 seconds) putting the iPad in Airplane mode. It started charging again. I haven't repeated this solution, but will and continue to re-post until the word gets out.

The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:

Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup... Restore as New...

Restart / Reset

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

Try this First... You will Not Lose Any Data...

Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...

Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...

Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)

Release the Buttons...

If that does not help... See Here:

Backing up, Updating and Restoring

If you try all these Steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP is the Next Step... Be sure to make an appointment first...

thank you!

tried erasing all content/settings. no luck.

can't connect to itunes to do any kind of back up, but i had an icloud back up that worked alright.

when i do a cold restart (sleep/home buttons) with the ipad plugged in it will say 'not charing' in the top right by the battery icon.

but once i unplug the cable it and plug it back into the ipad, 'not charging' won't show up.

any ideas?

I think you should take it into the Apple store. The 30 pin USB can go bad, mine did. When I'd plug it into the wall it'd say 'not charging' even though it did trickle charge. I tried plugging it into 3 different computers, with multiple cords, and none would see it.

About the last home remedy is to look at the connector and see if there's any obvious debris, or if you have a can of air, blow it out, but chances are the port itself has gone bad. Barring any obvious signs of damage, it should be covered under manufacturer's defects and your iPad replaced.

sorry, wasn't very descriptive.

if i restart with the ipad plugged in, it'll say 'not charging' after reboot.

if i unplug the cable, and plug it back in, it doesn't say 'not charging', or give any other sign that it's charing at all, as if the cable isn't even plugged in.

closest store for me is sendai, about an hour and a half away by train.. might try to go this weekend if i cant work anything.

thanks for all your help!
