Cannot log into Apple Support Communities

Using my partners account to log this issue - as recently I cant log in with my account (though I have used the forums since 2006)

I click on sign in. I enter my appleid & password & submit.

I am presented with the login screen again with the following message

"Please sign in again. For added security, we need to reconfirm your Apple ID"

I enter my password again, and submit.

Im directed to a screen with the heading "Pick a username".

It has my apple ID details - so I have evidentally authenticated ok.

Choose your Apple Support Communities username.

Your username is your public identity in Apple Support Communities.

It cannot be changed after you create your account

I am not sure why I have to choose a username - I have been using the Apple Support Communities forums since about 2006 - probably earlier. But anyway....

I enter a username, accept the Terms of Use & click on Continue.

I get the following error message:

An account utilizing this email address already exists. Only one account per email address is allowed on Apple Support Communities.

Im really not sure what has got screwed up - but it appears my appleid and my (previous?) forums account are clashing. Its either a bug or my data is screwed up.

Anyone have any tips on how to fix this?

Thanks 🙂

My Support Communities (forum) Account

I have only ever had one Apple Id.

Using AppleId to log into the support forum I think is a relatively recent thing.

Hi,

What is the alias you are having problems with?

If it is saying you have multiple IDs with the same email, have you been able to find them?

I have the same problem as the ElianaF's partner, and I am signed in under a friend's ID, as I cannot get in using my own due to the same error messages outlined above. I used to use the forums a lot years ago, but I haven't been here in a while.....I can only guess that I previously had a username? But I don't know what it is. I really hope someone can help!!!!

FYI, I went to Apple store today and 4 Mac Geniuses could not help. They suggested support ticket with ExpressLane (found somewhere in support pages) and that was awful and no help. At the ExpressLane's suggestion I called AppleCare and they were obnoxious...didn't understand the issue and kept saying they needed serial number off my device to confirm coverage. I also searched my iTunes to see if there was a username shown in there somewhere....nothing. I am at a loss here. And I REALLY don't want another apple ID, thanks.

Any ideas?

Thx.

Problem solved!

I think this issue is a mixture of conflicted apple IDs giving problems on the apple server but also conflicted and / or damaged permissions on my MacBookPro. Here is what I did:

First of all I followed the instructions in this link:

How to find out if you have multiple Apple IDs

It seems like a strange set of instructions because it is asking you to find out if you have an apple ID when you know you have one! Part of this process will also involve re setting your password which also seems strange because loosing your password was not the problem. However if you follow the instructions you end up with a page which in my case showed that I had two apple IDs using the same e mail address. It was this conflict that was causing the problems. The solution is therefore to change e mail addresses so there is no overlap of e mail addresses between accounts.

For some people this has been enough to solve the problems. However for me one of my accounts would still not work.

On another thread I had been advised to repair permissions which I had done from disc utility but it had not helped. However on OSX daily I read..."In mac OSX Lion repairing permissions from the Disk Utility app doesn’t repair the users file permissions"! Hmm nice one Apple- reparing permissions does not repair permissions! It seems that you have to use disc utility from recovery mode.

I then followed these instructions on OSX daily (dot com)

Repairing a Mac Boot Disk with Disk Utility & OS X Lion

  • Reboot the Mac and hold down Command+R (To boot into recovery)
  • Select “Recovery HD” at the boot menu
  • At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select “Disk Utility”
  • Select the boot volume or partition from the left menu and click on the “Repair” tab
  • Repair Disk is now possible, click on “Repair Disk” to repair the boot volume
  • Now verify disk permissions and repair them

And bingo both accounts work!

I am NOT creating a new password, simply because I don't want capital letter on it, typing pass in apple store every 5 minutes is a pain in the *** already, I don't want to turn it into a complex pain.

So I have this new apple id just for the forum, yay, with my other messed up ones this is probably the 4th or 5th one, who knows?

Apple will end up having messed up info about me? Who cares?

F*** apple's crazy policies! Yay!

Hi fpierobon,

Did you have a different username that you can't sign in under? If so what was it and what error did you get?

Watching these forums, it seems many times it is not a password issue, but an email collision issue, i.e. you have an email that is shared between two or more Apple IDs or an Apple ID and a different Apple Support Communities user.

I'd recommend you check How to find your Apple ID for Apple IDs sharing the same email way before I'd recommend changing passwords (which wouldn't help anyway if it actually is an email collision issue).
