Hopefully not too dumb a question but what determines the first page that a book opens on?
Mine always seem open on Chapter 1, Section 1 - which I'd like to change

A typical book would open like that (linear), of course, and hold the last page when the user returned.
What reason would you use to have a book open elsewhere but the beginning?
Normally the book opens there where you closed it after reading some pages. I repeat the question of K T: Why would you open it on another page? (btw: there are no dumb questions, not even our's).
I don't presume to know earwormsmobile's rationale for opening to a different page than the first one, but as for me, I would like it to open to the cover page, instead of the first page of the text. Is there any way to get it to do that?
Insert a Section Page or even an intro movie if you have one before your Chapter Pages otherwise after an iBooks Cover turns the first content it encounters will of couse be Chapter 1 Section 1 in your case.
I fully expected the book to open where it had last been closed - but for some reason its opening on chapter one.
my question was raised because if thats not the default action, I'd like to override or set my own default.
When I load a new book, it opens on the first page, when I page through several pages and close the book, it opens on the last page read. The same when I do this with a PDF book.
We are talking about iBooks, right? When it does not behave like it should, uninstall it on the iPhone/iPad, reboot the iPad, connect and check the iBooks app again in the Apps page of iTunes, so that it syncs the app into the iPad, and the books. Then see if it behaves correctly.
