Transition only for one video track?

I have 4 parallel video tracks to have 4 videos run simultaniously in every corner of the screen. I want to fade in and out each video clip separately. When I add a transition to a video track, all other tracks below are faded as well. Is this a bug? The only but inconvenient solution is to set keypoints and manually fade the transparency.

How can I prevent the lower video tracks from beeing influenced from the transition in the upper tracks?

It doesn't matter whether I convert the clips into compound clips or not. In the first picture you see the bad result with normal clips, in the second with compound clips. It also doesn't matter when I put the transition inside the compound track by double clicking it (picture 3). It is all the same: The track with the transition influences all tracks below. If I had more than two clips, all other lower tracks are faded by the single transition in the upper track. Any idea?

It is Final Cut Pro X 10.0.2.

That's interesting - I didn't know you could add cross-dissolve to Connected Clips, but obviously you can.

I just copied what you have done but it works fine on my system.

Have you tried trashing your preferences?

Unexplained faults like this can often be fixed by clearing out FCP X's preferences (for some reason, they get knotted up from time to time).

Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and perfectly safe, both to download and use).

http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/

With Preference Manager, you can backup the Prefs when FCP X (or any of the Apple Professional Applications) are working normally. Then when either of the applications are acting strangely, Trash the Preferences, then Restore from your backups (just a mouse-click).

If you trash the prefs and don't restore them, you will need to manually restore all your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then your backups are up to date.

Doesn't fix every problem, but it fixes a lot.

I tried to do a little video to recreate the situation, using two clips, resized and placed , and it worked consistently well (setting a fade in for a clip does not affect the others - in the screenshots, notice that only the top left clip is faded, as it should be).

How come your screenshots don't show ANY video from the lower track at all? Are you sure you are resizing them and placing them right? Can you see the video of the lower track at any point in the timeline? Did you see it before applying the transition?

Here are the screenshots from my little test:

The time line, with four clips (at a point where only one of them is fading in):

The viewer, at that point. The faded clip is top left. All others aren't faded:

That's exactly the problem. The lower video is not shown because it is faded by the upper video track. This is my question.

By the way, trashing the preferences did not help. The same problem occurs on my other Mac. It occurs with every project. The example from my post is only a rough project to demonstrate the issue and is not my working project.

That's really strange - I was going to suggest trashing the application and reinstalling, but if you have the app on two different macs and it happens with both, it suggests it's caused by something you are doing, rather than some error in the system.

As I said earlier, it works fine for me.

Hopefully, Tom Wolsky will be getting out of bed soon. Let's hope he can throw some light on the matter.

Steffen,

I see you have your upper clip in the primary storyline, and the connected clip below it (where I would normally put the audio).

Try putting the lower clip in the primary, and the connected clip above it.

(Just a hunch, because when you press 'Q' to add a connected clip, FCP X puts it above the primary storyline by default).

(And I just remembered that version 10.0.2 fixed the problem of adding transitions to connected clips).

Steffen,

Open a new test project and then find the 'Ladies' View' clip in the Event Browser. Select it, and press D to add it to the primary storyline.

Move the playhead back to the beginning of the storyline and then find the 'Ohne Titel' clip. Select it and press Q to add it as a Connected clip.

It should appear ABOVE the 'Ladies' View' clip.

Now add your transition to the 'Ohne Titel' clip and see what happens.

(Can't try it myself because FCP X is tied up with something else at the moment but I thought it was worth a try).
