How can I make an AAC version of a song? All I see is "Create an MP3 Version". I do not want to pay for a shorter version of a song that I already have! Why is APPLE doing this to us?!?!?! GREED, that's why!! #venting 🙂

Creating an mp3 version of the song gives you a full length mp3 version of the song for free.
If you do some very basic research you would understand how iTunes works and not make ignorant silly statements.

Read the question, dumb ***! I'm trying to change some of my songs to AAC format. They are already in the MP3 format.
I'm trying to make some of my playlist songs into ringtones. Everything I've read or watched said the song has to be converted to AAC format.
Right-click on the tune and select "Create AAC version..." from the pop-up menu. Quicktime can also convert MP3 to AAC.
Ringtones need to be AAC (MPEG4 audio, aka .M4A) audio of less than 30 seconds in length. Once converted, find the file and change the suffix of the file name from .M4A to .M4R and drag the file into iTunes and it will be recognized as a ringtone.
There are a couple of applications that do this for Windows, and OS X provides a mechanism to do this with several tools and even provides means for batch conversion and automation of the process.
This is the problem...I right-click on the tune and I get "Create MP3 Version" , not "Create AAC Version".
Yes, you need to change your import settings to AAC, then that menu will change.

Well...I tried that, but it doesn't stay in that format once I leave that window. It stays in MP3 format. Looks like I can't use MY iTUNES PLAYLIST for ringtones.

It won't change the existing MP3 file to AAC. It will create a copy in AAC format and leave the original alone, so you will habe two files of the same song: one MP3, one AAC.
Sorry folks, I should've been more clear. When the 'Drop-down' Box appears (when I right-click), the "Create MP3 Version" is still there even when I change the import setting to 'AAC'.
Did you click the OK button (twice: once to close the setting, once to close the preferences window) after changing it to AAC.
Man, that's the odd thing...I click OK to close the setting, but there isn't an OK to close the Preference Window. Go figure.
