I just called Applecare with the same issue. They told me at frst to buy a different brand of disc!
However after some troubleshooting eventually we deleted a file called "com.apple.finder.plist" which is found in the Preferences folder Under Library.
I deleted this file (which subsequently gets regenerated) and then burned a disc and it worked. So it wasnt a brand issue.
hope that helps.
Brand isn't the issue. Regardless of brand, sometimes the burner works, sometimes it doesn't. Error message is the same, whether using a DVD or CD. I'm having the same problem and would benefit from a more thoughtful reply.
i have recently had this problem usng 10.5.7 iMac , i solved this by reducing the amount of data i was putting onto the disc . I wasted 6 discs trying but rather than thinking about what I was putting onto the disc and what brand i was using i tackled it by the amount i was putting onto it , however it always waited 'til the end before it told be thus using the disc useless . When I put the discs back into the Mac they did not even register on the desk top . .
Really, it's such an easy, low cost, low frustration, fix.
My computer recognized it right away and the"eject" from the computer even works. I was able to burn video DVDs from iDVD with it too. I was amazed to see iDVD found and burned to the drive with no problem ( was expecting the usual comptibility glitches so common to apple products).
One of my friends has a new giant screen etc. 2013 iMac, and this is the only solution for her (NO DVD drive installed on those!) She. also, is a professional photographer who uses DVDs with her clients.
Mine is small and I have it sitting right on the "stand" (foot?) of my iMac, so it takes up virtually no extra desk space.
I can't tell you how thrilled I was to solve this issue so easily and cheaply!
I exchanged them for Maxell DVD-R which were a couple bucks more and burning works fine now.
I'm a former user of Taiyo Yuden DVD+R, I've completely switched to M-DISC DVDs and Blu-rays because of its 1000 year life span. So far, I've burned about 100 with zero problems. Interestingly, M-DISC forces you to burn at 4X ONLY. I tried a variety of burning applications including Apple's Disk Utilities, Toast and others. In all cases the burn "locks" to 4X.
I guess there must be a method by which the blank disc talks back to the software to burn the proper speed.
Using a different brand of disc worked for me too,( memorex worked, TDK did not) but the TDK dvds worked in the burner on my son's mac book pro so go figure! Thanks though, because I was worried that my DVD burner wasn't
working at all!
🙂
I have the same two related and INTERMITTENT errors with various brands at various burn speeds from max to min:
I get either of two messages (but only at the end after it looks as if the disc has been burning!)
1. The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
2. The disc can’t be burned because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0x8002006E).
Last time I had this problem, I did as Dynamyq said and deleted com.apple.finder.plist.
THEN BAM! I had no Finder. And NOTHING I did would "generate a new one"! And there was a limit to what I could do without a Finder.
I called my Apple dealer for help and had to take my big iMac in so they could re-install my whole MacOSX!!!! They said NEVER delete com.apple.finder.plist !
So how do we reconcile my experience with Dynamyq's experience?
WHEN THE HECK IS APPLE GOING TO ANSWER THIS?
I get this all the time. I had a 27" imac, which since buying it, has had a new Motherboard, new HD, new everything just about, except burner (just my luck, I think this was source of all the problems after a
there are countless guesses and suggestions made by people, including apple support staff, but nobody actually seem to have found one single consistent SOLUTION.
PLEASE, PLEASE someone prove me WRONG
I just started having the same issue. I use my Mac for my photography business. I depend on burning disks for clients. I have a ton to send out this weekend. I can't because I get the same error message. Any help yet? I am desperate here!!! I could lose business.
I had this problem repetedly for over 2 years, my computer would get really hot also, as I was trying to burn. Some of the suggetions helped but only temporarily. The apple "geniouses" told me I needed to replace the drive, but not sure what it would cost until I made an appointment and brought it in.
SOLUTION:
I purchased an external USBDVD reader/writer from BestBuy. It is just plug and play. My computer programs recognise it with out issue. Mine is a slim portable LG GP 40 DVD writer ( it writes CDs, DVD RW and CD RW too) . It is for "notebook users" but works perfectly fine with my iMac. The deciding factor for me was that it was only $40. I"m pretty sure judging from other apple repairs we've experienced, that I wasn't going to get my DVD drive replaced for anywhere near $40.
Since you are a professional, you may need something faster, there are a lot out there to choose from.
I believe replacing the drive is your only sure fix. I know a lot of people who have experienced issues with mac internal dvd/cd drives. That's probably why they no longer install them in their newer computers, although they'll tell you that the future is all about the cloud.
I have an early 2009 iMac, 4Gb memory running OS X Lion 10.7.5.
Good luck!
After MONTHS of investigation, trial and error, pram resets, massage oil, hypnotherapy and yoga, I am quite certain the only answer to this long running question is this:
NOBODY GIVES A ****, Least of all APPLE.
I hope the last poster was right, as I am left now with the only possible solution of replacing the drive. I have seen they are on ebay for around £50 (new from reputable sellers). So I guess I am going to have to learn how to replace them, and just go for it. I no longer have any respect for Apple, their desire to satisfy shareholders and keep their exponential growth in share price running (which is simply impossible anyway, so they will fail) is far greater than their famed historic desire to satisfy those now irrelevant but formerly very important people, namely, CUSTOMERS.
I tried burning at a slower speed ,started off at time remaining 7 minutes then slowly climbed to (get this) 1hour 42minutes all for a 700mb music disc . i gave up, but only with great difficulty.
I just tried another burn, as I sometimes get one done (1 in 10, on 2 speed only), and i got a new error this time.
"The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
Never seen that before, anyone else ever seen this or know if it helps diagnose the true fault with my machine?
Solved! This media quality site gave the tip.

I bought Verbatims made in Taiwan.
Now I can burn and play DVDs no problems on my intel duo iMac (2008) running OS 10.608.
