itunes 10.5.3 hangs when converting quicktime mov file to ipod version

I have a .mov version and a .mpeg1 version of a short video in iTunes. They play fine in iTunes. To play them on an iPod, I am trying to use the Advanced/Create iPod or iPhone version function. iTune hangs in trying to convert each of these files.

Mac OS X (10.6.8)
