How can I stop the overflow of text into another cell in numbers?

Is there somewhere a command where I can set the cell settings in a way, that the text overflow is not visible in the empty cell next to it?

Read through some discussions, and it seems that the only way is to wrap the text and manually set the height of the cell.

Is there any other way?

Please help asap. I need it for my project.

Put "something" into the cell into which the text is flowing.

User uploaded file

B2 and B3 contain the same text, pasted in.

B4 contains =B2, which copies the text (but not the formatting—ie. size) from B2.

C2 (and the cells to the right of C2) is empty.

C3 and C4 each contain a single space character.

Hi Barry

If your understanding is the correct one, here are my two cents.

I insert the formula ="" in the first standard cell of the "column to the right"

Then I apply Fill Down.

This way the formula in automatically inserted when I add new rows.

I do that in columns whose width is set to the smallest one : 8 points.

But as the OP tested the wrap answer, I assumed that he wished to have a contents which adjust itself the characters size so that the string fit the cell.

It's PeterBreis which already answered two or three times the question as I understood it.

Hi Brad,

You are replying to a question from Jan 25, 2012.

would like to STOP the text from overflow, NOT using wrap text and NOT place something in the adjacent cell.

The Numbers app has moved on since then.

Adding to Barry's excellent reply from Jan 26, 2012

Put "something" into the cell into which the text is flowing.

Perhaps you can experiment with this:

User uploaded file

Type a space into each B cell and make Column A narrower

User uploaded file

Hide Column B

If this does not help, then I do not understand your overall aim. Please reply with more details and perhaps another contributor can help.

Ian.

Thanks Ian,

When text flows into the next empty cells, I find it harder to match up a spread sheet to database fields in preparation for a database load. It is not a deal breaker to not have this option, but it would be nice. Adding a space is not an option since that would then load to the database. In this case, the sheets can be very large and some cells can contain lots of text. Brad
