How can I mute the mic on the iphone so that I don't hear it during calls?

When I plug headphones into the iPhone 4S, I can hear the sounds being picked up by the iPhone's internal mic being rerouted into the headphones during voice calls (i.e. I hear in my headphones what the person I'm talking to is hearing from my mic). This happens on my Shure se535 headphones with the mic cable attachment as well, and happens with every pair of headphones I've tried on the iPhone 4S. The 3G S didn't have this problem.

Is there some way of turning off this terrible "feature"? Often, if I'm on public transit or on the street, the noise I hear from my internal mic is as loud or louder than the voice of whomever I'm talking to.

Anyone have a suggestion of how to deal with this?

Thanks!
