PB g4 Universal No/No Smoking Symbol

I have an A1106 PB G4/1.5ghz/1gb(2 slots). I thought the HD went bad (it did), so I put a new HD in it. Formatted and Installed OS X from the super-drive on the PB, but now the PB will not boot. It loads to a screen that displays the universal no/ no smoking symbol. I booted the new drive in Target Mode from my MacBook Pro and ran disk util to verfiy the disk and disk util says the new drive is OK. Although, I can't use the permissions features in disk util. Also, on the PB, now I cannot see the DVD or an external drive when using the option startup. Only the internal drive shows up, so its seeing the drive. This seems whacky to me. Any suggestions.

What OS did you install? Did you use a retail OS installer or the Install/Restore disc that came with the PowerBook? You can't use an installer from another model Mac.

The max OS for a PowerBook is 10.5.x.

Thanks for the 10.5 cap info. I put 10.6 on it. But, when I installed 10.6 I could boot from the disc and use the utilities on the disc, and I was able to install it. After the install, I can't see the disc when doing an "option" start, I can only see the internal HD. The 10.5 limit explains the icon, but not the lack of choices when doing an option start. What about not being able to verify or repair permissions on the PB in target disc mode?
