Logic Studio upgrade 8 > 9/X: an open question to Apple

Dear Apple,

As a staunch Apple enthusiast, I need to submit a question about Logic Studio.

Last December, I was finally going to upgrade my Logic Studio package from 8 to 9.

As new plans for Logic applications were unveiled, the 8 to 9-upgrade disappeared from my Apple Store cart.

I have contacted the local support, even talked to a Apple US product specialist, and while I really thank them for all of their very kind assistance, they could not help me, since the item is, simply, no longer available.

Let me say: I love my Logic Studio; I always praise its quality. When people ask me why my music productions are so great, I tell them everything about it, Mainstage, and so on.

I talk about Macs. I talk about iTunes. I talk about Garageband for iPad and all the iPhone apps as stunning frontiers to creativity.

And, of course, I remember Steve Jobs, and his unforgettable skills to bring us more and more amazing products. The vision of a company that it is not just "Steve's thing", but an unmatchable environment of people oriented to customers and innovation.

But fact is that, as Logic Pro and Mainstage migrated for good on the Mac App Store, I can not upgrade my Logic Studio anymore.

Moreover, at this current date, there is no Logic "10" version yet, or, as far as I know, a clear word about it, and even if I will be able to upgrade from my version (or not).

On the other hand, I can still buy a full Logic Studio 9 box - including a software that I appreciated, Soundtrack Pro 3, which is not available on the Mac App Store and it is now presumably discontinued.

Assuming that I want - and I want to pay for - an original Apple product, and I am not considering any "unofficial" options, my question is: how is it possible that a loyal customer can not upgrade its Apple software?

Could you, please, help me?

As The Beatles sang: "Don't let me down".

With best regards, sincerely,

Francesco Lo Forte

The answer is very simple: there are no more upgrades!

Apple went away from upgrade with the Mac App Store: Aperture, Final Cut Pro, etc. all have no upgrade available, but the new much lower prices also don't make it a loss for you, especially because you can now install these apps on all your personal Macs instead of buying multiple copies.

Soundtrack Pro came originally with Final Cut Studio (at some point it was even available as an individual purchase) and didn't make it into the Mac App Store, which seem a pretty clear sign, that it has been discontinued.

Hello Blueberry, thank you for your comment.

While I am, and I already was, afraid you might be right, anyway, it sounds not reasonable.

I am a official, registered Logic Studio customer: I can not upgrade my previously registered software, but I can still buy the Studio 9 package (including the presumably discontinued Soundtrack Pro 3) at full price.

It just does not make sense to me.

I would have understood this scenery if we were talking after the announcement, or the release, of a completely new version (i.e. Logic "X"), but this is not the case.

Registered Apple customers should always have a chance to upgrade, most of all from the previous version of a current product - as the version 9 actually is - and furtherly when the whole boxed version is available for purchase.

The logic behind this seems very very simple: Apple moved all products they care about to the Mac App Store. They lowered the price, so upgrade costs are no longer an issue. That's it. Apple has done it over the years with all their software and also removed the boxed versions over time (maybe when the leftover boxes are sold out?)

So, yes, you can easily upgrade: just go to the Mac App Store and buy what you want. Soundtrack Pro and WaveBurner still seem to be discontinued, therefore are no longer available.

Blueberry,

I apologise for my late reply.
And while I see your points, sorry, you just seem to not get mine.

Assuming I still find Soundtrack Pro and WaveBurner very useful, they are not available on the Mac App Store but I can still buy them in the boxed Logic Studio 9 version, so, technically, are not effectively "discontinued".

While I fully support the Mac App Store move, I can not find much logic in the fact that a registered customer has no chance to find better products however currently available in another way and with a much higher price.

If Soundtrack Pro 3 and updated WaveBurner are now really discontinued they might even be, per to say, made available as free applications from the Mac App Store - at least until the new Logic "X" version.

Just my thought.

Thank you again for your comment.

You solution is simple. Dont buy Logic Stuio. Buy Logic Pro standalone and keep the rest of your suite from 8, there are no major gamechangers in the rest of the suite anyway.

And yes, Apple are ending upgrades, full stop. End of unfortunately. It ***** to be quite honest, I've upgraded again and again since 7 (when I got my first Mac), and used Logic since 4.

In the future, they may bring in in App upgrades, the same way you have an option to download Garageband libraries inside Logic 9, butt thats probably me just being wishful.

Dalaconic,

thank you very much for your sympathy.

Logic Studio (now Apple-linked to Logic Pro) is still the best music production suite on the planet. And I think that an original product is, first of all, made by the work of people who made it possibile.

To buy an original product is the way to respect such work and to support its future quality. I will always stand by this; it even proves especially right when you get such a beautiful piece of software as Logic is.

As Blueberry pointed out, previous options are no longer available and the Mac App Store came for good - with great advantages for both customers and developers, no doubt about it.

But in this particular case, things are still in the same frame: complete boxed Studio on full price sale, no more upgrade purchases, Logic Pro 9 and Mainstage 2 in the Mac App Store, and no Logic "X" in sight, to date.

While not entering in the merit of these choices, I experienced a sort of "void" in such policy, which I wish will be taken into different, better, (registered) customer consideration for the future.

If I was not so lucky to bump in a friendly retailer who still had a couple of Logic Studio 9 upgrades, I would have been somewhat lost in a limbo... And for a professional user, this is not cool at all.
