Ex. In a google search, after selecting several pages and then wanting to return to a previous page, I find there is no back button. Can't go back unless I use history which is slow. Is this feature called "snap back"?

Look at 1 under "The Safari 5 web browser window". Also Safari > History > Back, or ⌘[
Is it possible that the current page has opened in a new tab or window in your browser? If so, there is no previous page in that tab or window to go back to.
Also, what exatly do you mean by "there is no back button"? Is there no button at all or is it just grayed out?
