can I hide the table of contents?
I would like to just dive into chapter one and not have a TOC. Is that possible?

Apologies, I should have stated my question more clearly.
Is it possbile to not have a table of contents with ibooks author?
I think you can just delete the TOC page.
How do you do that? It appears to be automatically created and expected from itunes producer.
Were you able to find a solution to this? My book only has one "chapter" and so does not need a real TOC.
I don' think it can be done. Unfortunate considering how horrible it is in landscape.
When I hand my iPad to someone who's never seen a book made with iBA, they are invariably confused by the TOC, sometimes to the point where they want to give up before they discover how it works. That is a Very Bad Thing, but there's nothing to be done about it except wait for v2 which will hopefully be better.
