AFP slow to connect for Snow Leopard clients, OK for Tiger…

I've just upgraded our Xserve from 10.4.11 to 10.6.8. I've noticed that it takes up to 60s to connect via Connect to Server "afp://servername"; it takes even longer via the sidebar. This affects screensharing too. Using the IP address makes no difference.

Initially I thought it might be hardware related, but then I discovered that the few remaining Tiger clients we have connect instantly for AFP (can't test screensharing!). Also, Chicken of the VNC seems to connect instantly even on Snow Leopard clients.

Is there something special about the way Snow Leopard clients talk to the server for AFP & VNC/ARD? The delay occurs between entering the address and being prompted for credentials. The server is a standalone fileserver: Open Directory is not involved.

Any ideas? Thanks.
