My Verizon bill was large last month with texting charges. But most of the folks I text with are iPhone users too. I thought iPhone to iPhone texting was free. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Why would you think this?
IF both iphones have ios 5 and both iphone shave imessage turned on, then the texts will not be billed as texts.
However it does use data, so it would count against your allowance.
You must use iMessage in order to get "free" texting. That means both users have to have iOS 5 and iMessage enabled.
As roaminggnome said, it uses up your data, and iMessages may convert to SMS if you are in a low-coverage area.

I thought all of the data plans were unlimited. Mine is.
Well, not anymore unless you are with Sprint. Unlimited only applies to grandfathered customers (like myself thank goodness).
