Change your iBook in iBook Author to British / Australian / Canadian English

Hi all,

Hope this helps for British, Australian and Canadian English and sheds some light on Languages in iBooks Author and my experience. You may not have to do all steps but I think it covers all the bases.

1.

Ensure your system language is correct. System Preferences > Language & Text > Language should be set to British or Australian or Canadian English at the top. Remove "English" from the list if you are not going to write in American English... I know, don't have to do this step but makes me feel better 🙂

2.

Go to System Preferences > Language & Text > Text should be set to "Automatic By Language" or British or Australian or Canadian English

3.

Open iBooks Author. Start a new template. Test by writing some text. As you type, it should recognise the right language. Notice the Inspector window as well. Under T (Text) and the More tab, there is a drop down called Language. You can change it to any of the options, which looks good if you're writing in mixed languages and switching between American/ British/ Australian/ Canadian etc. but the default should be British or Australian or Canadian English according to what you have done in number 1 and 2 above.

4.

HELP! Not working for my iBook I've been working on!

British or Australian or Canadian English seems only recognised when you have done number 1. and 2. above and started with a completely new template. But don't worry. Open the template. Open your old file. Select the page thumbnails. Cmd-C to copy. Switch to the new blank template with correct spelling settings. Select the page thumbnails. Cmd-V to copy. Should be fine now.

Anyone with other tips on this matter, please contribute. The "Language Switcher" app is cool but not relevant in this case because you always only have "English" as one option. Thanks to Tom as well.

It doesn't seem to work. Having a "Chapter Number" item, I can select and change the language to another one in the panel Text>More. However, applying this does not change anything. Chapter stays Chapter and is not converted into the equivalent term for the language chosen.

You have misunderstood that setting. It is for spellcheck and has no connection to translating anything.

To get localized templates, set your OS to the language in question and then open iBA.
