Q: mobile.me mail not accepting my password, suddenly.

"MobileMe IMAP server “mail.me.com” rejected the password"

This is the message that I get when I enter my password in Mail on my iMac. I am using the passord that is listen in "keychains password". This just appeared today, after years of no problems with mobile.me account. Any ideas welcomed.

Did you try the suggestion in this Apple KnowledgeBase document: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3103?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Kurt, Seems that POP does not apply, since it is an IMAP account. All of my POP accounts work fine. It's my MobileMe IMAP email that is denying access, saying that my keychain password is not valid.

I have done a temporary work-around by forwarding my mac.com mail to one of my POP accounts. But that is not very convenient or how I am accustomed to working.

Okay, so that won't work for you, so then I'm thinking that your Keychain password for that account is corrupted. We can test for that and fix it if that's the issue:

    1. Quit Mail

    2. Open Keychain Access, click on Passwords and scroll through the list to find the password entry for that IMAP account and delete it (be sure you know the password before you do that). Then quit Keychain Access.

    3. Restart Mail and enter your password when prompted, and check the box to store it in your Keychain. If it works, that's great. When it's done checking mail, quit Mail again.

    4. Restart Mail and see if the problem is still there; if not, then your problem is solved, unless your Keychain password becomes corrupted again.

I have tried your recommendation. Still no go. The problem seem to be that my iMac is looking for a MobileMe iMAP type account and everything is now stored in a iCloud IMAP account. This iCloud account works fine on my iPhone and fine when I go through the browser to iCloud.com. I wonder is Apple has changed something which would make my MobileMe IMAC account no longer work OR can I have only service from one or the other, not both. Hmm!

Okay, I've heard of this issue, but until now I had no idea you were using iCloud. Others have experienced this same issue, and they found the solution to be setting up a new account for that MobileMe/iCloud account and using @mac.com as the domain.

Counterintuiutive as that sounds, you should try that, since you've got nothing to lose at this point. You can always delete it if it doesn't work.

Mail prefs will not even let me add a new account.

Mail prefs will not even let me add a new account.

If you open Preferences and click on the '+' sign to add a new account, it doesn't let you? If so, then your preferences file is probably corrupted. So, let's see if we can fix that.

    1. Quit Mail

    2. Go to Home/Library/Preferences and remove the com.apple.mail.plist file

    3. Restart Mail, setup your accounts and passwords again, and wait for Mail to find your existing mail.

    4. If everything works as it should, that's great, and you can delete the com.apple.mail.plist file you removed.

Thanks, Kurt, for all your info/ help. I have concluded that, because I had my mobileme acct turn into the iCloud account, my MAIL in my non-Lion iMac could no longer access the mobileme server. The only way now that I can get my .mac mail is from the iCloud.com website. I guess that this was going to be necessary sometime before June 30, 2012.

I had the same problem as you. me.com mail works fine on my iPad, iPhone, and icloud.com, but on my Mac's Mail app, a few weeks ago it started giving me an error saying the password could not be accepted, so I typed in my correct password, and it still wouldn't accept it. I had to open Mail preferences and delete the icloud account, then set up a new one. Now it works fine. Hope this helps!
