I don't have the admin password to my imac. I have tried to reset it using the installationdisc. I get to the reset password tool, but the only user in the list is root admin. In the discview only installationdisc, no harddrive is visible. New password for rootadmin is not accepted. What to do?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

First repair the disk with Disk Utility...

"Try Disk Utility

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*

3. Click the First Aid tab.

4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

It'll boot like a newly setup Mac, but all your stuff should still be there once filling out the stuff.

It worked!

I had to select my Mac OS X volume before I could see the First Aid tab. The volume didn't contain any errors, but after the repair the volume was not visible in the system. I had to reboot again from the disk to make it visible and be able to start the terminal to create a new administrator. All files on the computer were deleted (fortunately I had made a backup), but programs were still there.

Thanks!
