My Appleworks 6 .cwk do not open in Pages 09

As you have found, all AppleWorks (& ClarisWorks) files will have the .cwk extension. The iWork applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files.

You can copy the contents of draw documents, paste them into an AppleWorks word processing document in object mode (click the arrow in the tool panel), save the WP document & then open it in Pages. You won't be able to edit the objects, but they will be individual objects. You can copy & paste from AppleWorks to Pages but you would have to do it object by object or it will be one big uneditable object.

There is nothing other than AppleWorks that can open paint or database documents. Database data can be copied & pasted into an AppleWorks spreadsheet, saved & opened in Numbers or saved as ASCII/plain text & opened in most any spreadsheet, database or word processing program. Paint documents can be saved as one of many different formats to be opened in most image editing programs. I think PICT gives the best results, but it's not a format supported by many "modern" apps. I use GraphicConverter to then batch convert them to .png. If you don't want to do than, exprot them as .png or .tif from AppleWoks. You will have to add the appropriate extension as AppleWorks won't do it for you.

This is because you are pasting them into a document which is in text mode rather than draw mode. This is the correc process:

1. Open the Draw document. Go to the Format menu and select Document: note the margin settings.

2. Open a new Word Processing document. From the same menu item set the margins to be the same, having if necessary changed the orientation to Landscape in Page Setup.

3. Go to the Draw document. Select all (command-A) then command-G to group. Copy.

4. Go to the Word Processing document and click on the draw tool in the tools palette (the arrow): drag the mouse within the document to enter draw mode. Paste. You may need to drag the drawing to the correct position. Hit shift-command-G to ungroup. Save.

5. Save this document. Drag it onto the Pages icon in the dock. Your drawing will now be opened in Pages and can be saved in it. You will be able to select individual objects and edit them. However I have found that if when you saved the Word Processing document in step 4 there are still some grouped objects, they will be grouped in Pages but attempting to ungroup them will hang Pages: I don't know whether this is a consistent problem, but it's advisable to check for grouped objects and ungroup them in step 4.

I've been reading through the discussion trying to find help with opening my .cwk file. I have a mac mini running Mac Os X 10.7.2. The .cwk file is an address list. I've tried pages and numbers to open this file without success. Do you have a suggestion? Thanks in advance.

You address list is probably an AppleWorks database file. The only this that will open AW database files in AppleWorks. To use it in a different application, you'll need to:

• Open the file in AppleWorks
• Save as... Text (may be called 'ASCII' or 'ASCII Text')

This will produce a tab delimited text file, which can be opened by most spreadsheet or database applications.

Will the old Apple Works run under Lion? Up until two years ago, I was still using Apple Works for a bunch of stuff, and now I am finding myself unable to open the old files. I was under the impression that Apple Works was PowerPC and is no longer supported under Lion?

For batch processing, I use Pages>File>Open, choose a folder full of .cwk documents, and open ten or more of the documents at a time using Command Click. The whole bunch open as Pages documents at once. Then I cancel each one with the red dot and save each document which automatically becomes a Pages document. These new Pages documents go on their own right back to the same folder with the old .cwk documents, so I have two copies of each. Then I use Command Click again to highlight all of the .cwk documents in that folder and drag them to the trash. All that remains in the new folder are the new versions of each document as Pages documents. Is there an easier way to do this?

Yes, but only in one of the emulators such as Parallels running Snow Leopard Server software (which is now very cheap to buy).

Why Snow Leopard Server and not just Snow Leopard?

Getting it to work with Snow Leopard is possible but technically messy - the method is described here. It's simpler with Snow Leopard Server (there is a link to the process in the page I've linked to).
